Republican Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl both are among the top nine congressional talking heads of the year, according to Tuesday’s edition of Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Washington politics.

The paper tallied the lawmakers that have appeared most often on five Sunday news programs: CBS’s “Face the Nation,” NBC’s “Meet the Press,” ABC’s “This Week,” CNN’s “Late Edition,” and Fox’s “Fox News Sunday.”

McCain finished No. 1 overall with 13 total appearances. Specifically, his small-screen credits feature three appearances on CBS, two on NBC, four on ABC, one on CNN, and three on Fox.

Kyl finished in a three-way tie for ninth place with Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., with seven appearances each. Kyl’s specific credits: one on ABC, four on CNN and two on Fox.

Overall, five Republicans and 13 Democrats appeared on Roll Call’s list of the top 19 Sunday news shows’ guests. The five Republicans made 43 total appearances, while the 13 Democrats made 93 combined bookings. Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, also made the list, tied for seventh place with eight appearances.

Among current and former 2008 presidential candidates, McCain led the field with his 13 guest credits. He was followed by Democrats Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut with 10 credits, Barack Obama of Illinois with nine, and Joe Biden of Delaware and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York with five apiece.
